The stories behind the programs at KHP

Behind KHP’s program are hundreds of personal stories. We recently shared a number of these stories with our partner, Neighborworks America. Here is one such story about one of our residents.

J.R. had been living in low-income apartments in the Oak Ridge area after the death of his wife in the early 1990s. He experienced a home invasion at his first apartment complex, and the occurrence of other home invasions in the neighborhood prompted him to find a new place to live. His second apartment was in a rough part of town and crime in the area was escalating.

His children live and work in and around the Knoxville area, and they urged him to move closer to them not only for safety’s sake, but so that they could spend more time together. J.R. moved into Willow Place Apartments in August 2012 and has thoroughly enjoyed the safer and quieter locale, and seeing his family more often is an added bonus.
